How to change your Google Account email

YouTube, other Google services link to a Google Account
You need a Google Account to sign in to your YouTube channel. That same Google Account is used across other Google services like Gmail, Maps, Blogger, and YouTube itself. Because of this, a YouTube account is really just part of a Google Account, which means things like your login email, recovery details, and basic account information are all handled through Google’s system. As a result, changing your YouTube email means updating your Google Account settings rather than YouTube alone.
One important thing to understand is the difference between your main sign-in email and your notification or recovery emails. Notifications usually go to your primary address, but you can adjust this using account settings or alternate emails.
If your account uses a Gmail address, that primary email can’t be changed. However, if your Google Account is set up with a non-Gmail email as the main address, you can change your YouTube email by following the steps below.
  1. Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click Personal info in the left menu.
  3. Under Contact info, select Email.
  4. Next to your primary email, click Edit.
  5. Enter your new email, verify it, and confirm.
Changes will take effect across Google services, including YouTube.
For Gmail users: Skip to the transfer section below, as direct changes aren’t supported.

How to change YouTube email

YouTube Studio in a YouTube channel
Direct changes for Gmail addresses on YouTube aren’t supported. But there’s a way to work around this so that you don’t lose out on any of your videos, views, or subscribers. First, you need to have a brand account to do this. If you don’t, you’ll learn how to change to a Brand Account immediately after these steps.

Step 1: Open your YouTube account settings

Begin by opening your YouTube account. Go to the YouTube homepage and click your profile icon in the top-right corner. From there, open YouTube Studio. On the left-hand menu, scroll down and select Settings at the bottom. Next, click Channel, then Advanced settings. Scroll down to Other settings and choose Manage YouTube account.

Step 2: Manage permissions on your YouTube account

No managers if the channel is not a Brand Account
Inside your YouTube account, scroll to Channel managers and select Add or remove managers. If you don’t see this option and your screen looks different, it likely means your channel isn’t set up as a Brand Account yet. In that case, you’ll need to switch your channel to a Brand Account before continuing. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to add managers.
After entering your Brand Account details, Google will ask you to sign in again before making any changes. This additional step keeps your account secure. Sign in, then click Manage permissions. You’ll now see a list of users who can manage your channel, including the primary owner and any additional managers.

Step 3: Add the new email to your YouTube account

To add a new email, click Invite new user in the top-right corner. Enter the email address you want to move the channel to and assign it a role. Do not choose Owner at this stage—select Manager first. Send the invitation, then check the new email and accept the request. Once accepted, the new email will be added as a manager on your YouTube account.

Step 4: Change roles from manager to owner

Next, update the role of the newly added manager to Owner. If you plan to keep both emails linked to the channel, you can stop here. However, if you want to fully transfer ownership, return to Manage permissions and change the role from manager to owner. Some channels require a 7-day waiting period before this change is allowed. This is a built-in security feature from YouTube. If that applies to you, simply wait seven days and then continue.

Step 5: Transfer ownership to the new email

Finally, transfer full ownership to the new email. Go back to Manage permissions and change the new owner to Primary owner. Accept the confirmation from your email to complete the transfer. Once done, the original email will be downgraded to a manager. If you no longer need it on the channel, you can remove it entirely.

How to change your YouTube account to a Brand Account

If you need to switch your channel to a Brand Account, start from the YouTube homepage and open YouTube Studio using the icon in the top-right corner. From there, scroll down the left-hand menu and click Settings at the bottom. Next, select Channel, then Advanced settings. Scroll down to Other settings and choose Manage YouTube account.
On the account page, if you don’t see the Channel managers option with Add or remove managers, it means your channel hasn’t been converted to a Brand Account yet. You’ll need to make this change first in order to access that feature.

Creating a Brand Account

Create new channel if you don’t have a Brand Account
To do this, you’ll need to create a new Brand Channel that your personal channel will be moved to. Go to your YouTube channels page and click Add or manage your channels. Select Create a channel. It’s very important that you create a new channel so nothing is lost during the transfer. You can give it the same name as your current channel, unless you want to rename it. Check the box confirming you understand, then click the blue Create button. This will set up the channel you’ll transfer to.
Manage YouTube account to confirm it’s a Brand channel
Next, return to your personal channel in YouTube Studio. Click Switch account and select your original account. Go to Settings, then Channel, followed by Advanced settings, and choose Manage YouTube account. Under Advanced settings, select Move channel to a Brand Account. Sign in again to confirm your identity. Make sure the channel being moved is your original personal channel. In the section labeled Choose an account to move this channel to, click Replace next to the Brand Channel you just created.
Before continuing, note that the following items will be permanently removed:
  • The channel is being replaced along with its videos
  • Subscribers, likes, and other content
  • Any comments you’ve made on YouTube
  • Your replies and likes on comments, your search and watch history
  • Gift settings
Carefully confirm that the selected channel is the new Brand Channel you just created. Once you’ve verified everything, check that I understand and wish to proceed, then click Delete channel.
Also, review the changes that will happen after the move. Remember that your channel name and icon will update across YouTube, and your channel URL may change. However, some content may not transfer, and comments will not be moved. Your creator demographic information will be removed, and all channel permissions and delegates will be cleared, meaning you’ll need to re-add them.
Do a final double, and if you’re completely sure, scroll down and select Move channel. The process usually takes about 10 minutes. Once it’s complete, you can continue with step two to finish changing the email on your YouTube account.

Conclusion
