Legacy's Summer to include the ABC's Aruba, Bonaire & Curacao
Master your ABCs this summer aboard S/V Legacy, Windjammer Barefoot Cruises' newest tall ship, as she plies the Spanish main between the southernmost islands of the Netherlands Antilles - Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Located a scant 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela, the "ABC Islands" are home to crystal clear waters, miles of pristine beaches, great shopping and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the Caribbean. ARUBA - In Aruba enjoy scouring the capital city of Oranjestad for bargains in Delft blue pottery or relax on seven miles of sugar white sandy beaches on the Turquoise Coast. Snorkelers and certified divers can explore the reefs while nature lovers ramble across the island on a Jeep Safari. Rediscover ancient Amerindian drawings in Ayo or hike up the building-sized boulders in Casibari. A trek up Mt. Hooiberg - affectionately called "The Haystack" - offers a panoramic view of the entire island and, on a clear day, you can see all the way to Venezuela. CURACAO - At the Seniour Curacao Liqueur Factory, natives still use the (nearly) 500-year-old original recipe to create the orange-flavored treat that made the island of Curacao famous. Here on the largest of the three ABC Islands you can also sample the world's only beer brewed from distilled sea water at the Amstel brewery. While in the main city of Willemstad, shop for French perfumes, Italian silks and Swiss watches. If shopping isn't your bag, head for the hills on a mountain bike to the 1,230-foot summit of St. Christoffelberg in Christoffel National Park. If you have any time left, explore the depths of the Hato caves, where stalactites and stalagmites are mirrored in a cool underground lake. BONAIRE - Off the beaten path and away from the hustle and bustle, the island of Bonaire is completely surrounded by a national park, and for good reason: the finest diving in the Caribbean - some say the world - can be found there (and the locals want to keep it that way). After exploring the crystal depths off of Klein Bonaire, enjoy a lazy day on Bonaire's pink sand beaches. Then head for the Gota salt ponds, where it is said that catching a glimpse of a green flash at sunset is good luck. But it's the lucky Windjammers who will capture the most spectacular sight offered by the ABC Islands -- the daily migration of 15,000 pink flamingos - Bonaire's national bird - as they leave at sunset for nearby Venezuela. And of course "Z-divers" - as well as beginners - will have the opportunity for plenty of down time at each of the ABC Islands. Whether you choose a one-tank, two-tank or resort dive, there will be plenty to write about in your log book as you explore the warm waters with crystal visibility and a magnificent kaleidoscope of marine life. And afterward, back on board S/V Legacy, it's time to relive your adventures with fellow shipmates over our famous rum swizzles.
Junior Jammers Kids Club
Younger sailors won't miss out on the summer fun thanks to the Junior Jammers Kids Club, Windjammer's answer to those stuffy, sweaty summer camps - and your desperate need for a well deserved, fun family vacation! Youngsters aged 6 - 12 can stowaway aboard S/V Legacy for free (when accompanying their parents, or for half price when only one parent sails.) If mom and dad need a break to do grownup stuff, we'll take care of the kids. Junior Jammers won't have time to miss their video games this summer. We promise a fun-filled adventure, whether its snorkeling in Bonaire, hunting for "buried treasure" in Curacao, building sand castles in Aruba, or taking a turn at the helm of a real Tall Ship, they'll really learn the ropes aboard S/V Legacy . And won't they have something special to write in their back-to-school "What I did on my summer vacation" essays!
